For some of us it's 
a struggle just to keep our
heads above water.

Heart Yourself

If many are the afflictions

and you're strong in your convictions

then pray to be delivered 

from your self-inflicting pain addictions

because you're suppose to love yourself

and that's all that matters

so if your whole world shatters

better sweep up every piece

or else you'll never truly know peace

as every piece you find

will help give you peace of mind

don't regret loving someone

but don't be led to believe

that you're obligated to receive love back

when in fact some see love as only a game

without a controller 

you can try to control her

you can try to control him 

pushing all of their buttons  

but they won't respond the same

and you'll have yourself to blame

because you're suppose to love yourself

drawing a picture of a heart is a start

but if you don't make it a part of you

you'll be picked a part 

finding yourself at pick-a-part

looking for the part that completes you

when really it's yourself who completes you

and defeats you

so be smart

because you're suppose to love yourself 
even if you're missing someone else

Your Move

It may not be a popular decision
but you know that you didn't envision
being with someone who didn't share your vision
who didn't understand your mission
who wouldn't even stand to listen 
or hear anything that you read 
like when you showed them the poem 
about the monsters in your head
they ignored you and went to bed 
enough said 
so wave goodbye
say farewell to the fairy tale 
if they ask you why 
tell them you know the ending very well
you've been through hell already
hurt by those who didn't want to hurt you
but patience is a virtue
that's what you kept telling yourself
while loving those who didn't love you
and barely loving yourself 
but this time it's different
the difference is you
the ones from your past 
that didn't past the test
they see the differences too
you just held on to an idea for so long
that it couldn't have been wrong 
but then when it was
you couldn't remember how to be strong

There's no time to flip
off those who doubted you when
you're catching you dreams.

Monsters

I was told it was all in my head
and that they never existed
but still I insisted
that they were real 
if they could only feel
what I felt
then I told the ones who should've cared
that they were there
and that I was scared
but did they care
no 
their response 
so
that's when I knew
monsters weren't just monsters
they were people too
that's why some refuse to fight them
knowing that they're fueled by fire
they choose not to ignite them 
I fight them despite them 
because I'm no longer that kid who lost it 
claiming he saw a pair of eyes
while staring into his closet
being told to stop telling lies 
monsters are alive
they're just not in the closet
or under the bed
they're in my head 
just like they said

It's just you now
the world has turned upside down
and you're so down in the dumps
in another one of your slumps
that you can't see the upside at all
as you've watched everyone fall
so you feel your time is near 
you hope the angels call
but which ones
the good ones
or the bad ones
because you've had ones
by your side in the past
that's why you're the last
but it's not your time yet
so forget it
you will regret it
if this consumes you 
so don't let it 
you say you want change
you even pray for change
but if you don't change your mindset
your mind won't be set on change
how much more can you take
the grip is getting tighter
how many more excuses will you make
this is a hold you can break 
you did say you were a fighter

Let It All Out

I'm not quite sure
if I'm insecure
or just insane
as I try to find a cure
for this pain
but just as I predicted
the wounds are self inflicted
they always are
it's not that I don't try to fight
I just fight trying
so I stay up all night crying
letting tears cover my shirt
holding on to the hurt
why do I feel so low
in all honesty
I honestly don't know
but if I give up 
it's a foregone conclusion
that this was an illusion
and it was all for show
so for now I'll scream 
hopefully not in vain
it's not easy chasing a dream
nobody said it would be
it's even harder to catch
as well it should be
but I guess
that's why I stress
I'm not quite sure

Some of us can't seem 
to find the keys to the chains
we've placed on ourselves.

Friendly Observation

Where did all of your friends go
didn't all of your friends know
apparently not
but just to be fair
did they ever really care
here's why
remember when you had so many
now you can hardly seem to find any
unless they need to grieve
then it's you who can never leave
meanwhile all the time you've spent
listening to them vent
you could've easily paid the rent
if you were a shrink
unfortunately you're not
you were just the current trend
who was just being a friend
now much to your surprise
but not really
they've taken off their disguise
telling others whom they also despise
a bunch of lies
which isn't at all wise
actually it's kind of silly
okay more like dumb
no wonder you're going numb
but before you completely feel nothing
you should know something
they were never your friends
they were just a past time
so let this be the last time
anyone gets the best of you
be around friends who invest in you
or invest in a window with a view
whatever keeps you away from them
because there's nothing to say to them
not anymore

Mr. Body

I hope to be a famous nobody
right now I'm nobody famous
but I would still be somebody
even if I were nameless
much like if I were an artist
I would paint pictures
or if I were a preacher
I would quote scriptures
but I'm more of a handyman
I help to fix light fixtures
so the light never flickers
now making sure it shines bright
well see that's your job
so make sure you do it right
even if I didn't have a face
I would still have a place
for it matters not who I am
it only matters what I do
and I said this before
that this may not be for you
so some have been critical
which is typical
some speak without thinking
it's not your cup of tea
yet you're still drinking
while still thinking of me
I appreciate the support
even if I don't earn anyone's respect
I'm okay with just having an effect
because I'm nobody famous
but if I can help somebody survive
at least I'll know somebody's alive

You know in your heart of hearts
that in your heart is where it starts
so you have to be smart
because this world doesn't know your heart
and you can't be content with laying there
especially when the world isn't playing fair
but it's not designed to 
so you must be careful of who's behind you
even the one you care for the most 
can make you a believer in ghosts 
they could disappear without a trace 
then reappear right in front of your face
with a dozen roses and a card
all because you let down your guard
but it's different this time 
you're the one who's committed the crime
it's about loving yourself first 
because not loving yourself is the worst 
now you could be given flowers
and feel loved for the next 24 hours
but if you want something to sustain also
that love inside your heart must remain also
so you can be a Valentine in every way
but why not make it Valentine's everyday

Take A Moment

I don't know what you're going through

but I know how you feel 

how easy it is to question what's real

living in a world that keeps you guessing

a world where very few are progressing

a world that's kind of depressing

it's not about the pressure to be perfect

it's about the pressure to see purpose 

to know that it's worth it

but now you don't even know anymore

and you forget what you're fighting for

like the first crash of lightning 

it's frighting to hear

it's frighting to say

I know

because I said it today

and I said it in such a way 

that hopefully makes it okay 

see we're all soldiers of a struggle 

just different ranks 

that's why it's important to give thanks 

for whatever it is we've gone through 

and we have to mean it

even if we wished we hadn't seen it

or gone through it

or felt it's wrath

because remember who chose the path

you did

I did

we did

so we cannot leave the battlefield 

this is a battle to the death 

even if we battle until we're out of breath

we must not yield 

let us take a moment

All That Remains

So here you stand
where very few stand
where very few have stood
not because they weren't strong
but because of a song
a love song
a sad love song 
it caused them so much pain
that their efforts died in vain 
in fact it changed their state of mind
to the point where they didn't mind stating
the fact that they had enough
even after knowing it was going to be rough
and knowing they were suppose to be tough
they had enough
so here you stand

where very few stand
hoping love still lives 
but if you open the door
and find out love doesn't live here anymore
what would you live for
it is better if you never cared
that way you could just like
meanwhile your heart's on strike
your feelings would be spared 
and  you would never be scared
you would never know pain
except the pain of never knowing love
is that what you have planned 
it's not
so here you stand
where very few stand 
ready 
still healing 
but willing 
unlike any other
because you're a lover
you're a fighter
and you fight for what you love
that's why the light from up above
and the light inside you 
are there to guide you

Say goodbye to the 
side of you that's killing the

They're killing themselves slowly 

all you have to do is listen closely 

to the screams 

of those who've just lost their dreams

they're feeling so blue inside

contemplating suicide 

but for some reason they wait 

so hurry before it's too late

your influence could mean so much

that's why you should keep in touch 

remember you've been there 

and almost disappeared into thin air

instead of an encouraging word or two

they would try to verbally murder you

but somehow you didn't die

and none of them understood why

just because you were down

didn't mean you would drown

if you realize you have purpose 

you'll always rise to the surface

so you may have something to say

to those who've lost their way

those who live in fear

believing the end is near

those who only see the beauty in dying 

rather than any victory in trying

just a little bit of your time is required

and maybe just maybe they'll be inspired

walking on by is your choice
but sometimes all it takes is a voice

Every Waking Moment

Another sleepless night
as I constantly fight
those painful memories
waking me up at night
like remember me
of course I do
for if it weren't for you
I could get some sleep
instead I'm counting the days
I haven't slept
instead of counting sheep
but quiet as it's kept
I try to keep my composure
but as I get older
I learn that this is too much
for one man to shoulder
so I pull over to the shoulder
to think about what's got me restless
but thinking about it makes me rest less
so really I'm inviting the pain
then putting my name on the guest list
I'm I to blame for this insomnia
for carrying the hurt
wearing my heart on my sleeve
like you wouldn't believe
and getting blood on my shirt
maybe so
but how was I to know
how was I to know
but if I can't let it go
then how am I to grow
how am I to grow
simple
with every waking moment

I Can See It Now

I remember when they said it wouldn't work
I remember when your friends would laugh
but I'm glad we didn't pass each other up 
by focusing on the things that other didn't have

we were doing fine by ourselves 
but we've made each other better as a team 
we never forget where we came from 
we know we both started with a dream 

I've been told that love is an illusion 
because you're all I see
and sometimes even I find it hard to believe
that I've given you all of me 

still I'm following my gut instincts 
we haven't steered each other wrong
besides we know where the other roads lead
and this one is for only the strong 

we're driving with purpose
not striving to be perfect 
one thing we know about any relationship
is it just has to be worth it 

we've learned from past experiences 
ups & downs come with the territory 
but hopefully we inspire others like us
every time we tell our story 

we didn't care what anyone else had to say
sometimes it's better to take that chance
we got our backs off the wall 
and went out there to dance 

maybe we can make that happen
so shout out to whoever you are 
maybe it'll start with the touch of the hand
reaching for the same star
